Lynn Hill Podcast for 10/25/05

It is great to hear that the Nose has had another free ascent. I don’t know any of the details but Beth Rodden and Tommy Caldwell are reported to have free climbed the Nose sometime last week. I talk about it in the podcast below (click on the link to listen).

These two free climbing the Nose proves a couple of things:

First of all, Tommy and Beth had the right state of mind, ability and desire to make it happen! I’ve heard many times, “Lynn could do the great roof because she has small fingers.” Tommy is missing the tip of his index finger on one hand and even though it would have been easier with all of his finger tips, clearly he was able to find a way to make it work. He proved my point that one’s attitude and spirit is more important than one’s physical make-up. The point of climbing is to adapt to the natural features of the rock and Tommy and Beth found a way to do it rather than letting physical limitations distract them. They both love to climb, have tons of experience climbing on all types of rock, and it makes me happy to hear that they succeeded as a team! They are an inpiration as climbers and as a supportive couple in their daily lives!

I am looking forward to a beautiful rhythm in the New River Gorge.

It is raining here in the New River Gorge, so here is a quick story.

Last week I was getting ready to do the superslab. I was talking with Kyle Lefcoff, a big supporter of the Access fund, AMGA. I told him about my design ideas for artificial climbing structures for families in parks. He offered to donate the money to build the boulder at North Boulder Park. The boulder will make it so mothers and their children can climb together! It is a great project.

It was nice to meet someone else in the community the is concentrating on protecting this beautiful resource that we have. We had a great discussion on how preserve and enhance the quality of the experiences that we have outside (having a bolt for safety if you get stuck in a Thunderstorm).

We raised money for the Access fund. Their mission, as I have said before, to keep climbing areas open. It was fun to have an excuse to get out of the office and go climb! That always puts me in a good mood.

Hopefully we will have the video up in the next week on the Lynn Hill Climbs website.

In the previous post I said I was going to California. I had a fantastic trip! Here are 2 pieces of news from my visit with Patagonia.

  • They are revamping some of their products, including the recycling of the capilene
  • My climbing camps will have more involvement with Patagonia. People coming to a Climbing camp will get a 20% discount on any online Patagonia order. Participants also get some great Patagonia gear when they come to the camp. Last camp we had a designer from Patagonia come and visit, which was a great experience. It is nice to have the added representation from Patagonia at the camps!

Also, on an interesting side-note, we have over a 100 visitors to the site per day! Thank you for coming, and leave a comment if you feel so inclined. I will do my best to have some more amazing adventures and report back to you on every detail. I am also going to start sharing some quotes that I think about when I need to be inspired.

Cheers!

I’m off to Los Angeles tomorrow to see my 98 year-old grandmother and my
oldest sister who lives nearby with her family in Santa Monica. On
Monday I will pick Brittany Griffith up at the airport in LA and drive
up to Ventura, where the Patagonia headquarters is located. It will be
fun to see old friends and reconnect with various people I work with.
Owen is scheduled to join the on-sight daycare for a couple of days
while I meet with people in marketing, apparel design, photo/web-site
department, and catalog editors. At the end of the day, I look forward
to hanging out and smelling the sweet ocean breeze at my
friend/college’s house in Santa Barbara. We may even end up climbing
upside-down on Rob’s climbing wall!

I will be in touch when I get back from California next Thursday!
Cheers!

It has been an exciting time around here. I just got back from the Sierra Summit event and talk a bit about it in the audio podcast.

There are a few spots left with the climbing camps this year. Check the climbing camps website to see if we have posted the 2006 tentative schedule.

This weeks audio! Enjoy!
